Istanbul Gelisim University’s Building Automation Initiative: 12% Reduction in Carbon Emissions Through Energy Efficiency
In 2023, the tender for the “Istanbul Gelisim University Building Automation System Procurement and Installation” was completed. Within the scope of this project, the lighting, fire detection systems, announcement system components, and related software in Block K were renewed, and the mechanical systems were revised. The primary goal during planning was to ensure energy savings and efficiency. In the lighting system, the number of fixtures was reduced, dimmable lighting was preferred, and daylight sensors were installed to support natural lighting and optimize energy use. As a result of the project, electricity consumption at the Tower Campus during the six months before the automation system went live was 1,352,118.8 kWh, while in the first six months after activation, it was 1,422,840.4 kWh. Correspondingly, CO2 emissions from electricity consumption were 789.6 tons in the six months before the system was active and 830.9 tons in the six months after. Although the total carbon footprint appears to have increased, this includes the opening of additional reserved areas within the Tower Campus during the reporting period (from 116,080.1 m² to 138,313.6 m²). When calculated per square meter, a 12% reduction in CO2 emissions was achieved. Our university will continue to diligently implement initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions.
